The Filipino Dragon Boat team won a gold medal in Tampa Bay Florida. The team won their third world title in the biennial International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) 10th World Dragon Boat Championships by winning the Premier 1000m event (small boat) in Tampa Bay, Florida Friday. They completed the race with in 4 minutes and 57 seconds, setting a new world record for the event. Australia finishes second and Hungary comes third.
The Philippine dragon boat team has previously won two gold medals at the 2009 Worlds in Prague, Czech Republic in standard boats (with 22 paddlers) in the 200m Premier Mixed and 200m Premier Open categories.
I have watched through a local TV show how this team struggles for funds and support from our government. Sadly, as claimed, they get nil support from our government. Gladly, with the help of some of our kababayans here and abroad, they have managed to gather all what they need to join the world championship dragon boat race.
Viva Philippine Dragon Boat team!
