With Sony only just releasing the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5, which can already be pre-ordered, it seems that Sony are already unleashing a newer, bigger and better interchangeable lens camera for the Sony Alpha series. The Sony NEX-7 is rumoured to be currently in development and set for release later on in the year.

What’s new?

Though it won’t be as compact as the NEX-3 or NEX-5, the NEX-7 is taking filling all the gaps in terms of the features the Sony NEX-5 was missing. It’s reportedly going to come with full manual control which should excite the photography enthusiast. A key feature which is sure to make the new Sony Alpha series camera anticipated by many will be its ability to shoot 1080p at 60fps, 1080p at 24fps, 720p at 120fps and also at 60fps. This is all thanks to the APC-C sensor the Sony digital camera will come with, in combination with the AVCHD video recording technology.

It also seems that the NEX-7 wasn’t released with its younger and smaller siblings due to technical issues, as Sony wanted to put the better APC-C sensor in the 7 model and were also looking to get the 3 and 5 models as soon as possible to gauge the market response and make the adequate changes to the bigger 7 model if necessary.

The competition

The 7, though still waiting to be released, seems to already be attracting some competition in the form of the Panasonic GH2, which also brings a similar sort of HD video capture technology. However, though it seems a new HD sensor camera war is building, Canon is still keeping its cards close to chest, waiting to see how Panasonic and Sony match up against each other when their cameras are finally released.

The Sony NEX-7 is yet to have a release date attached and pricing is also undetermined.
