Introduction
The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments in the Philippine General Hospital. Being an end referral center, the department receives patients from all over the country. These include indigent patients seeking specialized medical management, intensive care, and complex procedures which only PGH and the department, having a complete complement of subspecialties with pediatricians who are experts in their respective fields can provide.
In 2009 alone, the Department of Pediatrics saw a total of 60,824 patients. The bulk of these consults were at the outpatient department, which numbered 37,671 patients, comprising 61.9 of all patients seen. The others are admitted to the various service areas of the department which include two pediatric wards, a pediatric intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit and the Pediatric Emergency Room. These patients are admitted to the wards either from the emergency room, or for some less sick children who need procedure or treatment, directly to the wards.
The Department of Pediatrics cares for an average of 50 patients who requires blood transfusions, enzyme infusions, intravenous medications and chemotherapy per month. These patients are managed by the different subspecialties such as Renal, Rheumatology, Genetics, Hematology and Oncology, Gastroenterology, and Allergy and Immunology.
The Proposal
In light of the very high number of admissions to the wards and the number of patients who require procedures such as enzyme replacement therapy, chemotherapy, blood transfusion, and biopsy procedures, the Department of Pediatrics proposes the construction of a pediatric transfusion-infusion room at the office area of Ward 12.
The “Pediatric Transfusion/Infusion Unit” will be a 6 beds unit, supervised by the concerned Pediatric Subspecialty services with the assistance of a nurse and will operate from Monday to Friday strictly on a daytime (business hours) basis. Patients who need the service but are sick will be admitted, and would go through the usual admission procedures.
Location
The planned transfusion/infusion room will be located at the front area of Ward 12.
Description and Purpose of the Room
The unit will measure 4.8 m x 9.6 m. It will be an outpatient unit with 2 beds and 4 reclining chairs equipped with a sink, medication counter, emergency cart, oxygen source, and a refrigerator. There will also be a comfort room for the use of the patients and the staff.
The room will also be used as a daytime facility for the procedures such as enzyme infusions, blood transfusions, and administration of chemotherapy and other medications. It may also be used as a holding area for patients who underwent biopsies and require observation for a few hours prior to discharge. It will be available for use by the different subspecialties namely Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Allergy, Hematology-Oncology, Genetics, Renal and Rheumatology.
Renovation Costs
The estimated cost for renovation of the unit is P430,000. This fee includes rehabilitation of the medication counter and bathroom, installation of floor tiles, replacement of ceiling, electrical installation and painting.
